Although fire was an important historical disturbance in the Lake States region (LSR), our knowledge of its ecological role is not well developed relative to the western or southeastern United States. Under-representation of the LSR in national syntheses of fire effects limits the availability of region-specific information that is necessary for designing and implementing appropriate resource management activities, and for long-term forest planning. To identify existing regional fire science information and gaps in knowledge, I reviewed the literature (peer-reviewed scientific publications, and agency technical reports) on ecological effects of fire in the LSR. I will highlight areas of well-developed regional knowledge as well as areas in which information is limited to absent. I will introduce new knowledge resources developed as part of the knowledge gaps assessment. The webinar will include a panel discussion with Consortium partners engaged in research and monitoring activities. Resolving knowledge gaps via future research, including studies developed through scientist-manager collaborations, will facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of fire science and management in the LSR.
