In response to the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire and an ongoing decline in moose numbers, the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, the 1854 Treaty Authority and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources initiated a long term monitoring survey of moose response to landscape level changes in northeast Minnesota. Monitoring plots are incorporated into the annual moose population survey and are set up to track changes in moose numbers over time on landscapes impacted by wildfire, prescribed fire and timber harvest. The initial results indicate moose have responded well in areas impacted by large fires. The creation of large patches of early successional forest through fire or timber harvest that mimic large fires, are likely to be a key component of recovering moose numbers in northeast Minnesota and for avoiding the potential listing of moose under the Federal Endangered Species Act.
